CHAPTER 8

“Something very strange is going on with my brother.”

At the mention of Frederick, Beth’s stomach did very large somersaults, and she dared not look across at her friend as they walked through Pemberley gardens.

“Whatever do you mean?” Trying to keep her tone light, she tipped her head so that the bonnet hid most of her expression.

“Well, it has been a fortnight since he came to speak to me about your brother, and since that time, I have found him so cheerful and eager for company that it is quite inexplicable.” She looked towards Beth, but Beth, catching that look out of the corner of her eye, kept her gaze straight ahead.

The truth was she had found Frederick much altered also. However, it was not everybody’s company that he sought, but rather mostly Beth’s. Their dance together had been the beginning of their deepening connection – even now, she could recall his hands at her waist, the light in his dark eyes as they had danced together. Her breath had seemed to escape from her, and she had not been able to regain it until the very end of the dance. Since then, in these last two weeks, Beth had found Frederick often by her side, and she, in turn, had been longing for his company. They had not spoken of her brother as yet, but strangely, the desire to do so was continually growing.

“He has often been out walking with you, has he not?” Alberta remarked as Beth allowed herself a slight shrug of her shoulders. “You must find him tiresome company.”

“Indeed, I do not,” Beth answered softly. “He is your brother, so of course you will think him so. I, however, have found our conversations most pleasing, whenever we have had opportunity to walk together.”

“That is most interesting,” Alberta replied, a frown pulling at her brow. “To be sure, I have had every expectation that he would remove himself from our company just as often as he could, but now it appears that he is doing quite the opposite!”

Biting her lip quickly, Beth silently considered whether she might change the subject onto something else, or if Alberta would notice if she did such a thing. Yes, Frederick had become altered in his outward expressions, and certainly, to her mind, directed much of his attention towards her. Did Alberta notice that and question why Frederick was so eager for her specific company? Or did she think him interested in company in general?

“And your spirits seem a little improved also,” Alberta continued, as Beth managed a smile. “You still have not heard from your brother today, I suppose?”

At this, Beth shook her head. “Every day I wait and hope for a letter from him, but none have arrived.” Her heart trembled with a deep and unspeakable sorrow that her brother would never again send another letter to her.

“But you still must not give up hope,” Alberta insisted. “There will be some situation that has taken place, I am sure, but he will return to you very soon.
